Music by Jorge Sosa
Libretto by Cerise Lim Jacobs
Resonance Works opens its tenth anniversary season with the Pittsburgh premiere of Jorge Sosa and Cerise Lim Jacobs’ evocative contemporary opera, I am a Dreamer Who No Longer Dreams. A poignant and timely story, Dreamer explores the complex relationship between Rosa, an undocumented Mexican immigrant who is awaiting deportation, and Singa, her court-appointed attorney, an ethnically Chinese immigrant from Indonesia living in the U.S. on a green card. Through Rosa and Singa’s parallel yet divergent immigration experiences, Dreamer examines the complexities of American identity.
Dreamer‘s music is in Sosa’s original and personal voice which draws upon an eclectic mix of styles and influences, including traces of Asian and Mexican folk music, jazz, Afro-latin rhythms, as well as western classical traditions. A children’s chorus takes a central role in the opera, uplifting the voice and perspective of immigrant children through singers from the Pittsburgh Youth Chorus.

The Righteous is the newest opera from composer Gregory Spears and librettist Tracy K. Smith, the creative team behind Cincinnati Opera’s celebrated 2022 world premiere, Castor and Patience. Kevin Newbury (Castor and Patience, Fellow Travelers) will serve as stage director and dramaturg.
Commissioned by Santa Fe Opera and slated for a summer 2024 world premiere, The Righteous follows a preacher and leader of a growing church in the 1980s American Southwest, who finds himself caught up in the confluence of religion and politics, and the timeless struggle to reconcile spiritual humility with ambition in our modern world.
Opera Fusion: New Works (OF:NW) is a dynamic partnership between Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Created in 2011 to foster the development of new American operas, OF:NW has grown into a nationally recognized collaboration which is not only advancing in repertoire, but also serving as an inspiring example of a successful joint venture between an educational institution and a professional performing arts organization.
OF:NW offers composers or composer/librettist teams the opportunity to workshop an opera during a 10-day residency in Cincinnati. Residencies utilize the facilities, personnel, and talent of both Cincinnati Opera and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). The workshops are cast with a combination of CCM students and professional artists, and each workshop concludes with a free public presentation of excerpts followed by an audience Q&A session, all of which is streamed online.
